Boise State’s new matte black helmets. Boise beat UNLV 32-7.

Michigan State’s uniform sponsor, Nike, used the same reflective/chrome helmet idea as they did for Oregon in the Rose Bowl last year. Unfortunately, after a 4 year winning streak, Michigan State lost 12-10 at Michigan.

That’s the “Pistol Pete” logo on the Oklahoma State’s helmet. Cowboys beat Iowa State 31-10.

Northwestern went all-black for their home game against Nebraska. Unfortunately Northwestern lost 29-28.

1. Michigan’s not sticking around the top 10 for long.
Our sincerest congratulations to Michigan, who bravely scheduled a game down in Dallas against defending national champions Alabama. To put a near-guaranteed loss on your schedule like that for $5 million or so is a level of bravery most schools could never achieve. Of course, some people have different words they might use instead of “bravery.”
2. Bigger wins for Sparty than anyone else. If they win against Boise State and Notre Dame, they will have the toughest non-conference schedule in the Big Ten.
3. Wisconsin schedule isn’t going to impress anybody.
The Badgers go to Oregon State, but Corvallis is where football goes to die. The other three games; UNI, USU and UTEP will be about as far down on the national scale as they are in the alphabet. Sure, Wisconsin’s going to run up the score on all of these teams, but come on, even South Florida hung 52 points on UTEP last year.
4. Oh, and Michigan State is really good.
The reason people aren’t higher on Michigan State is that there’s some uncertainty about their new personnel, especially on offense. Plus, Le’Veon Bell only (“only”) ran for 948 yards last year, and while MSU returns nearly its entire offensive line, those guys struggled at times last year.
We’re still talking about Andrew Maxwell, a former four-star and Elite 11 QB recruit who’s entering his fourth year in the program, and he had the starting role sewn up as soon as Kirk Cousins cleaned out his locker. Maxwell is going to be good. It’s Bell’s offense, to be sure, but anyone expecting a liability at QB needs to get their head examined.
And then the defense. Good heavens, the defense. There are no weaknesses, and the strengths are plenty. As long as Will Gholston keeps his head on straight, he’ll be a household name by October. Denicos Allen should terrify opposing defensive coordinators with his versatility and pass rush, and best of luck to anyone who wants to throw at cornerback Johnny Adams.
The MSU defense was able to completely shut down Boise’s running game. Boise was forced to pass on nearly every down because of their inability to run the football at all. Boise’s top RB, D.J. Harper, was held to only 8 yards on 15 carries, and the team as a whole was held to just 37 yards on 24 carries. Even when MSU turnovers gave Boise the ball in MSU territory, the defense held firm, holding Boise to field goals every time. In fact, the only Boise State touchdown came off an interception return.
On offense MSU’s QB, Andrew Maxwell, threw for 248 yards; however the turnovers really made this game much closer than it should’ve been. Le’Veon Bell rushed for a career-210 yards and two touchdowns. He carried the ball an astounding 44 times and added 6 receptions for 55 yards. Le’Veon actually outproduced the Boise’s offense; 265 total yards to Boise State’s 206.
