Today, Michigan Wolverines lost Trey Burke to the NBA, but gained Drake Harris’ verbal commitment (ex-MSU verbal commit). You win some; you lose some.
But from everything I have heard about Drake Harris, it might be more like a lose-lose. I guess I won’t be as upset about MSU losing him if he ends up being a bust.
Typical 1am convo between Straight-From-The-Mitten and me.
Drake Harris, the 6’3 180 lb receiver out of Grand Rapids Christian, has officially decommitted from Michigan State, according to multiple sources.
Harris, who announced several weeks ago that while he was still committed to MSU, would reopen his recruitment.
Harris is considered one of the best WR prospects in his class, and one of the top prospects overall.
However, Harris father, said that he is still committed to MSU, according to Grand Rapids reporter Tara Hernandez.
It will be interesting to see what Harris has to say after his basketball game tonight. I’m sure a lot of reporters will be there.
No surprise here. Stupid Urban Meyer…
Drake Harris, the top WR prospect for the class of 2014 and one of the best prospects overall, has recently reopened his recruitment.
The 6’4 receiver verbally committed to MSU, and says he is “still committed”, he just wants to “look around.” Harris is planning to take visits to Ohio State and Florida, and is told ESPN.com that he is also looking at Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama, Florida State and Georgia.
Harris was recently visited by Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, and made the announcement following the visit.
Harris is a two sport athlete, and one of the top guards in the country. Harris was recruited by Michigan State head basketball coach Tom Izzo, and promised a chance to play for the Spartans’ basketball team. However, Harris also said that he was only looking to play football in college.
Signing Day is a long way off for Mr. Harris, however it questions what a “verbal commitment” truly means to high school kids now a days.
I will bet money that Drake Harris signs an LOI with Ohio State.
I hate Urban Meyer and Ohio State.
Drake Harris said he still plans to attend Michigan State, but he wants to look, and that means not just visit Ohio State, but Florida, too.
Harris, Michigan’s No. 2-ranked football recruit for 2014 who verbally committed to Michigan State in June, said his visit Monday from Ohio State coach Urban Meyer doesn’t change his plans, but may change what he does the next month.
I wasn’t saying I was de-committing, but that I had an offer from Ohio State and that I was happy about it. But it didn’t really change anything.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Harris, who has offers from Florida, Michigan and Notre Dame, said he has also heard from Alabama, but the Crimson Tide are not in his plans right now.
Michigan State’s offer is for football and basketball. All of the other offers are for football only.
After the visit from Meyer, Harris told the 24/7 recruiting network
They (the Buckeyes) are one of the best football programs in the country. You have arguably the best coach in the country. The campus is great, and the fan support is crazy.
Asked how Michigan State fans should feel about his commitment, Harris said:
That I’m committed right now, and I’m solid right now. I wouldn’t go to the point to say that I’m going to change my mind and go to a different school. Like I said, I’m committed to them.
I just don’t have a good feeling about this at all. Hopefully he will realize that we are the ONLY school offering him the chance to play both sports and that will keep him committed to us. But…
I hate Urban Meyer and I HATE Ohio State.
The standout combo guard, who is the nation’s No. 46 overall basketball prospect according to Rivals.com and potentially the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the state of Michigan, chose to play for the Spartans instead of their arch-rivals Michigan and Notre Dame.
“I just didn’t want to drag it out when I knew where I wanted to go. It is in my heart that I want to go to Michigan State so I didn’t want to hurt others by dragging it out.”
He continued by saying,
“It’s only 45 minutes away and both coaches, (Tom) Izzo and (Mark) Dantonio are going to be there for awhile. Their system fits me really good for football and basketball. I know Dantonio is going to throw the ball so I’m going to love playing for him and Izzo too. They’re both great coaches.”
This is so great for Michigan State.
Drake Harris, Grand Rapids Christian’s 6-foot-4, 180-pound two-sport star (basketball guard and football wide receiver), committed to MSU and said he will continue to play both sports.
He chose MSU over Michigan and Notre Dame, and this was another instance where MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo’s relentless recruiting style paid off.
“Coach Izzo’s been there since Day 1,” Harris said. “He’s recruited me since I was in the eighth grade. He’s been to more football games than any of the other coaches. He’s always been right there by my side, so it’s kind of hard to turn him down.”
“Coach Dantonio is also a great coach,’’ he said. “He’s stressed great things to me … there’s just a great family down there, and I believe Coach Izzo and Coach Dantonio are both going to be there for a while.”
